An Interview with Kathleen Norberg

Recently Christiane Lisabe had the chance to sit down with Artist Development Program alum, Kathleen Norberg to discuss the impact of the ADP program on her life and career.

Kathleen in a Senior at Belhaven College in Jackson, MS. majoring in dance. As a sophomore at Belhaven, Kathleen was place at the top of her class in both Ballet and Modern dance. Kathleen received the Bezalel award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement two years in a row and is a member the National "Who's Who" in colleges, recognized for her achievements in the Belhaven College Dance Department.

CL: How did ADP and your involvement at The Culture House strengthened your faith and help you as you went out into the challenges of the 'real world'?

KN: "ADP equipped me with outstanding training in dance as my personal character had a chance to develop and matured through the continual mentorship from the teachers and staff at TCH. I was continually encouraged to go deeper in my walk with the Lord by the example of TCH staff and teachers, both in and outside of class. The consistency seen in the lives of TCH staff and directors inspired me to purse excellence in how I respond to the challenges I face in life, especially preparing me for college and what I have experienced there."

CL: How did ADP and TCH contributed to the excellence of your work and how it has prepared you to be 'competitive' in quality with the rest of the world?

KN: "Because of being in ADP I have a deeper understanding and appreciation of good art and more confidence in creating works that encourage people to think about deeper meanings in life. While in ADP under the mentorship of Mona Enna, Tobin James, and Marc Wayne, I was able to create choreography that stood out among the other students at Belhaven College and was recognized for the depth of faith in God and excellent design elements."

CL: How did ADP equipped you to express and share your faith in a variety of situations?

KN: "Having the privilege to study under teachers who have been around the world dancing, choreographing, and teaching provided me with a variety of styles in dance technique. This coupled with a depth of knowledge from listening to the many testimonies and stories from each teacher as they illustrated their classes and encouraged us to go beyond what we think is comfortable and safe so as to reach for the stars as we follow God's calling on our lives."

"ADP taught me how to express myself in dance in a way that portrays my heart though movement. I learned the importance of being vulnerable and committing to opening my heart on stage to tell a story and testimony, using dance so other people can relate and be touched to the core of their being. As I saw the importance of being passionate in movement, I realized that the passion does not stop in the classroom or on stage but should emote though out my entire life in everything I do, continuing to touch the hearts of people around me as I listen to their heart and learn to love them. Being an ADP student gave me an important opportunity to learn to work with other personalities and to find ways to love and bless others around me who I saw day after day. I learned how to serve to be a leader, a quality that has opened doors in my college career placing me in numerous student leadership positions and allowing me to excel in my studies giving me favor in relationship with other students and faculty."
